SMUT PRESS

Vincent Wechselberger ‘Dreams and How to Keep Them’SMUT Press is proud to present Dreams and How to Keep Them by Vincent Wechselberger. The publication is the second photobook by Berlin-based photographer Vincent Wechselberger and the eleventh publication from SMUT Press.

Dreams and How to Keep Them is an insight into the artist’s shifting internal landscape, grappling with a fraught relationship to a notorious city that is as generous as it is unforgiving. The publication unfolds over a ten-year photographic archive and documents those who have shaped the artist’s experience in the city. Spanning intimate portraits, after-hours parties, bustling dancefloors and still lives; the images featured are a powerful testament to Wechselberger’s ability to capture the delicate balance between humour and excess, between beauty and chaos. The publication includes a foreword by journalist and author Amelia Abraham, and a closing text by the artist.

The publication will have the first official launch at BAM Works, Berlin, on 10 September before launching at GLUE Book Fair at the Institute for Contemporary Arts, London, from 12-13 September. An accompanying exhibition at 1014 Gallery will open on 17 September with handprinted works from the book.

Vincent Wechselberger is an Austrian photographer who studied at the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie. His work sits at the intersection of documentary and autobiographical photography, exploring memory, the body, and queer identity through deeply personal images. His photographs hold moments of joy, closeness, grief, and rapture, tracing how identity, desire, and the body define and are defined by one another. Wechselberger has widely exhibited at leading photography festivals and institutions, including Bundeskunsthalle and NRW Forum. In collaboration with Vitium, he published the zine Holes, a series consisting of 70 anuses and texts celebrating queerness and the relationships to this unique body part. His first photobook Ready, presented a humanistic portrait of contemporary queer sex work emerging from his own personal relationship with it.

	CRUISING ARCHAEOLOGY II: EUROTRASH

SMUT Press is proud to present Cruising Archaeology II: Eurotrash, the long awaited follow-up edition to the 2024 cult bestseller; Cruising Archaeology. Cruising Archaeology II: Eurotrash is the tenth printed matter produced by the press and will launch in a series of launches across sex clubs, saunas and book fairs across Europe, starting at MA1: Bunker in Old Street in London.

The project builds on the initial edition’s success by expanding the breadth of archaeological sites to various locations scattered across European cities including Berlin, Athens, Dublin, Barcelona and Paris. The diversity of cruising areas in this edition, including woodland areas, public toilets, palatial gardens, sex clubs and beaches, speak to the inventive, site-responsive forms that cruising assumes and situating desire within the folds of city infrastructure and natural landscape.

Much like its predecessor, the book pairs vivid scans of collected objects with writing that contextualises, complicates and historicises cruising’s material traces. Featured texts include interviews with Marc Svensson of You Are Loved, a London-based harm reduction initiative, and with Mati Klitgård of Gay Consent.Lab in Berlin - both offering urgent perspectives on chemsex, intimacy, and consent in contemporary queer life. Other contributors include Stav B, whose piece addresses the persistent erasure of lesbian cruising spaces, Jordan Tannahill’s piece recounts a wild night in Hampstead Heath, evoking the fantasy and libidinal charge of cruising grounds whilst Prem Sahib’s insert ‘Vape’ responds to the complicated relationship between the digital and the physical. João Florêncio’s powerful opening piece in the publication, titled ‘Fucking Ruins,’ interlaces queerness with empire, hauntology and decay.

The publication retains the pocket-sized paperback format of the first edition with the book’s design researched and assembled by designer John Philip Sage. Printed in Lithuania, distributed by Public Knowledge Books. Following its release, Cruising Archaeology II: Eurotrash will launch at a number of events including:

	THE CABIN
SMUT x Neven Gallery

SMUT Press is pleased to announce a one-day pop-up exhibition at Neven Gallery, showcasing a series of striking images by photographer Stylian Tastsoglou. These exclusive photographs were captured during SMUT Press' collaborative event Sex Moves Us Together with party and design collective, Playbody, at Algha’s Plantroom on November 9th, 2024.
Commissioned by SMUT Press as part of this event, the 2.5-meter-tall cabin-box fused elements of nightlife and intimate spaces, drawing on both the energy of the rave scene and the architecture of sex-spaces. Its compact design evokes the tight quarters of a toilet stall - a sacred space for many in the rave world - while also referencing the contours of spaces built for more private encounters. The translucent materiality of the box becomes a fulcrum point in itself, inviting a playful interrogation of cruising culture. It offers a moment of privacy for attendees, tucked away from the intensity of the dancefloor, while its bold presence in the room creates an intriguing tension between openness and secrecy that converts those inside the box into exhibitionists and those outside of it into voyeurs. The 3-D molded seats, attached at varying heights to a steel pole in the cabin's centre, encourages participants to contort, connect, and respond physically, making the experience as much about bodily interaction as it is about environment.
Tastsoglou’s dynamic images, caught over the course of the evening, capture individual snapshots of revellers in the cabin. The intimate shots playfully appropriate the format of the photobooth - often a typical space of playful, spontaneous fun - into a visual celebration of queer identity. In doing so, Tastoglou pushes the boundaries of this familiar, casual format, allowing his subjects to present powerful, unapologetic depictions of themselves that challenge the norms of representation.

The Cabin takes place at Neven Gallery on 9th April 2025 from 6pm-9pm. A limited edition zine containing the images shot by Stylian will be available for purchase at Neven Gallery during the event, and here following.

	CRUISING ARCHAELOGY
‘A Catalogue of Pleasure’

Initially born from an Instagram account bearing the same name, this project is a careful process of selection and curation that sees the anonymous artist reconstitute detritus and debris discarded in over half a dozen renowned cruising locations around London into cultural artefacts. Positioning archaeology as its point of departure, over 100 unique relics not only uncover and investigate the types of sex and pleasure that happen in cruising areas through a material culture lens, but also serve as a testimonial to the often invisible sexual practice.Accompanying the series of scanned objects is a foreword by Marcus McCann, author of ‘Park Cruising: What Happens When We Wander Off Path’ (2023) as well as an interview with OWL, a volunteer litter-picking group in one of the cruising sites and a report on ‘Jurassic’ a renowned local cruising site in Medellín by academic David Edgar. The soft-cover 200 page publication is purposely pocket sized, intended to be utilised as a nu-hunter’s-guide for those who cruise. The book’s design has been thoughtfully researched and assembled by London based designer Marco Cacioni. Distributed in collaboration with Public Knowledge Books. Cruising ArchaeologyUnknown ArtistLondon, U.K.200 pages14.7 x 21 mm Edition of 350Distributed by Public Knowledge Books.©️ SMUT Press (2024)

WHAT BEGAN AS DESIREfrom Various Artists
30% of profits from this project will be donated to Mermaids, a leading UK charity that supports transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children and young people as well as their families and professionals involved in their care through secure online communities, local community groups, helpline services, web resources, events and residential weekends.‘What Began As Desire’ presents the works of ten artists within the intimate format of an A5 postcard. Comprised of works by David Lindert, Issey Goold, Michele Baron, Léann Herlihy, Tobias Huschka, Augustin Puzio, Brian Teeling, Tyler Kelly, Kyle Quinn, and Simon Dyer & Nicholas Flanagan - many of the images depicted within this project address a blurring of distinctions between a public and private sphere. Derived from the penultimate line of Allan Ginsberg’s 1986 poem ‘Written In My Dreams’, this project’s title is intended to reflect and speak to the limitless possibilities and emancipatory potential in articulating and sharing our desires. Whether it be a naked body standing on a pathway, a dancer at a vogue ballroom turning mid-pose towards the camera, or an open drawer revealing the detritus of pleasure; these moments provoke questions about the fraught nature of visibility within the lives of subcultural communities.
This selection of postcards are prefaced by ‘Postcards to Friends,' an essay by Irish curator and writer Iarlaith Ní Fheorais which is presented within a sealed envelope, enclosed within a stamped outer shell. Ní Fheorais’s text considers this means and format of communication in which images and text are addressed for singular consumption but have the potential to be viewed by any and all. Her essay also touches on the particular complexities of queer friendships. Friendships that are often defined by stories of migration and geographical separation, fuelled by the perennial hope of better pastures and connections elsewhere.

	THE HORNY OF PLENTY
by Jack Scollard
10% of profits from this project will be donated to Terrence Higgins Trust which campaigns about and provides services relating to HIV and sexual health as well as offering support empowerment to those living with HIV. This 110 page zine is a compilation of images taken in London over the space of 12 months since Jack moved to the city. The zine is intended as a meditation, capturing the ceaseless intensity and boundless beauty of a city that never knows when to stop. Whether it’s sporadic snapshots in club cubicles, tender portraits at the lakes deep in the city’s outskirts or intimate moments during after parties, these vibrant shots testify to a quest for vitality and connection that followed two years of lockdowns.
Scollard’s playful and unrehearsed style of photography is reflected back in the zine’s whimsical graphic design, lead by Lisbon-based designer Graham Dow. Written contributions, including an interview conducted by Shane Morgan, alongside texts by Sean King and Berlin-based artist David Lindert, probe some of the darker themes raised in the images associated with a pursuit of pleasure. This is a bold and unapologetic work that immortalises a period of deep personal change for the author, but also captures the constant hedonistic attitude within London’s queer community.SMUT Press is honoured to have launched this zine at The Glory, 281 Kingsland Rd, London, E2 8AS, London, on April 27th, 2023

	CLOSE ONE’S EYESby Peter Greene

‘Close One’s Eyes’ is a 40 page photographic and text based zine by emerging photographer Peter Greene, and acts as the fourth publication in our printed matter series, released Wednesday, the 11th of January, 2023.
Whilst the zine’s title (a line paraphrased from a line in Bachelard’s renowned work, ‘The Poetics of Space’) may be a clear reference to concerns of the body in space, more widely this work can be regarded as a focus on the core idea of any experience of a space and time as being deeply particular and individual. “Small intricacies moments and pleasures”
(Excerpt from text from ‘Close One’s Eyes’)
Just as the line above suggests, Greene aims to capture the tender moments of beauty and quiet that exist in the in-between and frequently overlooked. Whether it is a person leaning over the edge of a bed, their back to us a suggestion of a deeply personal moment or the drama of warm red lights shining through the gaps in condensation of an interior window, these shots transcend the ever present subjectivity of the photographer, to exist formally as observations of quiet, unsuspecting beauty. These are atmospheric, timeless photos and a powerful statement of intent from an emerging talent.
Peter Greene is a photographer and visual artist based in Dublin, currently in his final year of the BA course in Photography at the Institute of Art and Design in Dublin. Greene uses his photography as a vehicle to document and reflect on the world around himself but also as a tool to generate significance to that world. This is Peter’s first published zine and the fourth work of printed matter to be commissioned by SMUT Press.
