Vincent Wechselberger ‘Dreams and How to Keep Them’
SMUT Press is proud to present Dreams and How to Keep Them by Vincent Wechselberger. The publication is the second photobook by Berlin-based photographer Vincent Wechselberger and the eleventh publication from SMUT Press.
Dreams and How to Keep Them is an insight into the artist’s shifting internal landscape, grappling with a fraught relationship to a notorious city that is as generous as it is unforgiving. The publication unfolds over a ten-year photographic archive and documents those who have shaped the artist’s experience in the city. Spanning intimate portraits, after-hours parties, bustling dancefloors and still lives; the images featured are a powerful testament to Wechselberger’s ability to capture the delicate balance between humour and excess, between beauty and chaos. The publication includes a foreword by journalist and author Amelia Abraham, and a closing text by the artist.
The publication will have the first official launch at BAM Works, Berlin, on 10 September before launching at GLUE Book Fair at the Institute for Contemporary Arts, London, from 12-13 September. An accompanying exhibition at 1014 Gallery will open on 17 September with handprinted works from the book.
Vincent Wechselberger is an Austrian photographer who studied at the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie. His work sits at the intersection of documentary and autobiographical photography, exploring memory, the body, and queer identity through deeply personal images. His photographs hold moments of joy, closeness, grief, and rapture, tracing how identity, desire, and the body define and are defined by one another. Wechselberger has widely exhibited at leading photography festivals and institutions, including Bundeskunsthalle and NRW Forum. In collaboration with Vitium, he published the zine Holes, a series consisting of 70 anuses and texts celebrating queerness and the relationships to this unique body part. His first photobook Ready, presented a humanistic portrait of contemporary queer sex work emerging from his own personal relationship with it.
